London Victoria station, Railway terminal in Belgravia, Westminster, England
London Victoria station is a terminal in Belgravia within the City of Westminster that connects southern regions of England to the capital. The complex features 19 platforms arranged in two separate sections with multiple entrance halls and shops for travelers.
The terminal opened in October 1860 and replaced a temporary facility in Pimlico that had operated for only two years. The new site allowed trains to cross the Thames for the first time via the purpose-built Grosvenor Bridge.
The eastern concourse preserves features from the era when rival railway companies shared the building and operated separate entrances for their passengers. Today the architecture reflects this earlier division through the parallel roof structures above the platforms.
Trains to Gatwick Airport run every 15 minutes during the day and reach the airport terminal in about 30 minutes. Three Underground lines stop at the station and link it to all parts of central London.
Each of the two station sections operates its own set of tracks with no physical connection between them, so trains cannot move from one side to the other. This arrangement dates back to when two separate companies ran the terminal and never merged their track systems.
