Fetteresso Castle, Category B listed castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Fetteresso Castle is a fortified residence located west of Stonehaven featuring Scottish Gothic architecture with distinctive crow-stepped gables. The structure displays a mix of defensive medieval construction and later elegant design features added during the 18th century.
The fortress was built in the 14th century as a tower house serving as a defensive stronghold for the region. During the 18th century it underwent major transformation, shifting from a purely defensive structure into a grand residential manor.
This stronghold served historically as a refuge and administrative center for the surrounding communities in northeast Scotland. Visitors can sense how the estate shaped local life and relationships across multiple generations.
The building is now divided into seven separate residential units, which means interior access may be limited for visitors. The exterior and grounds are surrounded by walking paths that allow exploration of the architecture and surrounding landscape.
The grounds contain prehistoric burial remains and Bronze Age artifacts that hint at very early settlement in the area. A Roman camp site called Raedykes lies nearby, and a 17th-century dovecote still stands on the southern grounds.
