Widnes is a town on the northern bank of the Mersey in the administrative region of Halton in England. The settlement forms part of the larger Liverpool urban area and sits across the river from Runcorn.
The settlement grew into a center for chemical production during the 19th century. John Hutchinson built a factory in 1847 and triggered rapid industrial expansion.

The Mersey Gateway Bridge links the town with Runcorn and provides access to Liverpool and Manchester. Visitors can reach the center on foot or by local bus from the railway station.
The name comes from Old Norse and appeared in medieval records as Vidnes or Wydness. The Catalyst Science Discovery Centre offers interactive exhibits on the history of local chemical manufacturing.
