Murrayfield Stadium, Rugby union stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland
Murrayfield Stadium is a rugby union venue in Edinburgh, Scotland, and ranks among the largest sports facilities in the country. The arena offers seating for over 67,000 spectators across four separate stands that encircle the entire playing field.
The Scottish Rugby Union acquired land from Edinburgh Polo Club in 1925 and opened the new ground on 21 March that same year. Over the following decades the facility underwent several expansions to accommodate growing crowds of spectators.
The rugby ground takes its name from the surrounding Edinburgh district and forms a deep part of Scottish identity when the national anthem echoes before home games. Supporters often wear traditional scarves on these occasions and celebrate together in the nearby pubs around the venue.
The city tram line connects the airport and center with a dedicated stop right next to the ground. On bigger match days, arriving about an hour before kickoff helps avoid crowds at the entrance gates.
During the Second World War the ground served as a supply depot for the Royal Army Service Corps while international matches continued on a reduced schedule. In later years the venue also hosted concerts and other large events beyond rugby competitions.
