Five Wells, Neolithic chambered tomb in Taddington, England
Description
Five Wells is a Neolithic burial mound in Taddington with two limestone chambers positioned back to back. Both chambers have paved floors and are reached through approach passages at either end of the roughly 23 by 22 meter long mound.
History
The monument dates to between 3400 and 2400 BC, a period when early farming societies were developing in the region. Thomas Bateman conducted the first systematic excavation in 1846, uncovering skeletal remains and various objects left behind from that distant era.
Culture
Over many generations, this site served as a communal burial place for early farming families. People used the chambers to lay their dead to rest, creating a lasting connection between the living community and this place.
Practical
The monument sits along the Limestone Way footpath, roughly 500 meters east of Taddington Moor along Sough Lane. It is easy to reach on foot and works well as a quick stop during a countryside walk.
Did you know?
The two chambers are paved with stone slabs, an uncommon feature for Neolithic burial sites in this region. This careful construction shows how seriously early farmers took their funeral rituals.
