Blackwell Mill, Former railway mill in Derbyshire, England
Blackwell Mill is a former mill and railway station in Derbyshire located at the junction where Great Rocks Dale, Chee Dale, and Ashford Dale meet. The site now marks the northern terminus of the Monsal Trail and functions as a cycle hire center.
A corn mill may have stood at this location as far back as 1066, with its remains now designated as an Ancient Monument near the Manchester Turnpike ford. The Midland Railway line that later passed through was eventually closed and repurposed as a recreational trail.
The transformation of the Midland Railway line into the Monsal Trail has created a connection between industrial heritage and modern recreational activities.
The location is convenient for a stop during a bike ride, as the hire center stocks various types of bicycles for different riding preferences. Sturdy footwear is worth considering since the surrounding area features green valleys with uneven ground.
The former railway station was among Britain's smallest, with platforms built to accommodate just a single train carriage. This minimal size reveals how the railway adapted operations even in the tiniest settlements.
