Aldgate East tube station, Underground station in Whitechapel, England
Aldgate East is an underground station located beneath Whitechapel High Street in East London, served by the District and Hammersmith & City lines. Two parallel platforms run side by side to handle passenger traffic on both routes.
The original station opened in 1884, but the current location was built in 1938 about 500 feet (150 m) further east. This relocation was needed to better support the expanding Underground network.
The station walls showcase 1930s tilework designed by Harold Stabler with images of London transport. These decorative elements shape the station's appearance and reflect the artistic style of that era.
The station is in Zone 1 and receives frequent trains heading to various destinations across the network. Access is through ticket barriers at several entrances around the station.
The platforms have notably high ceilings that create more space for movement than many other Underground stations. This generous height becomes apparent when you descend the stairs.
