Barnwell Castle, Medieval castle in Barnwell, England

Barnwell Castle is a medieval fortified manor in Barnwell, Northamptonshire, England, with three round corner towers and a twin-towered gatehouse. The stone walls that remain give a clear picture of how a fortified residence of the 13th century was laid out.

The site began as an early fortification in the 12th century and was rebuilt in stone during the 13th century by the Bernards, a local noble family. It later passed to the Montagu family, who held it for several generations.

The castle is closely tied to the Montagu family, who lived here for generations and shaped the surrounding area. Today visitors can walk around the exterior and take in the towers and gatehouse that once marked a seat of local power.

The castle is privately owned, so any visit to the grounds needs to be arranged beforehand. The exterior is visible from the road, which gives a good view of the towers and walls without needing access to the site.

The castle is one of the few surviving examples of a fortified manor house in England that still shows its original layout clearly. This makes it a useful reference for understanding how domestic and defensive needs were combined in a single building.
