Barnwell Castle, Medieval castle in Barnwell, England
Barnwell Castle is a medieval fortress in England featuring three cylindrical corner towers and a double-towered gatehouse. The stone walls reach approximately 30 feet high and display the characteristic construction style of the period.
The castle was built in 1132 as a fortified motte and bailey structure and later converted to stone during the reign of Henry III. This transformation shows the shift from temporary to permanent medieval fortifications.
The castle served as the residence of the Montagu family and shaped local life as a center of administration and defense. Visitors can still sense the connection between the building and the region's past.
The castle is in private ownership and visits must be arranged in advance through local tourism offices. It is advisable to contact ahead to secure access to the grounds.
The walls are remarkably thick, over 12 feet, and reflect the demands of medieval defensive engineering. This robust construction helped the building survive for many centuries.
