Small Isles, Island group in Highland, Scotland
The Small Isles are a group of four main islands – Eigg, Rum, Canna, and Muck – located in the Inner Hebrides between Skye and Ardnamurchan. Each has its own character, ranging from moorland and rocky slopes to dramatic cliffs, and they are home to small rural communities.
These islands were part of Inverness-shire until 1975, then assigned to Lochaber before becoming part of Highland in 1996. Settlement history spans centuries, shaped by Norse, Scottish, and clan influences.
Their Gaelic name Na h-Eileanan Tarsainn points to their position between mainland regions. Local communities continue speaking Gaelic and maintaining traditions rooted in island life.
The MV Lochnevis ferry connects all four islands regularly to the mainland port of Mallaig with scheduled weekly service. Weather can change quickly, so sturdy clothing and good footwear are needed for exploring the islands.
Rum contains a nature reserve hosting large colonies of Manx shearwaters, while surrounding waters hold the only known UK population of fan mussels. This rare marine life makes it a remarkable destination for those interested in wildlife.
