Kinloch Castle, Category A listed stately home in Highland, Scotland
Kinloch Castle is a red sandstone mansion on Rùm island featuring Tudor-style architecture and formal gardens surrounding the estate. The building contains preserved Victorian rooms with original furnishings and historical objects from its period.
The mansion was built between 1897 and 1900 by textile magnate George Bullough, who had inherited the island from his father John Bullough in 1891. Its construction marked the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of a new century in the Scottish Highlands.
During its peak period, the castle held grand gatherings where guests participated in hunting expeditions, played squash, bowled, and danced in the ballroom.
The property is managed by Scottish Natural Heritage and can be visited through guided tours that show the Victorian rooms and their contents. Visitors should check tour availability in advance, as reaching the island depends on weather conditions.
Inside the mansion is an Orchestrion, a rare electric-powered mechanical music instrument that was originally intended for Queen Victoria. The instrument remains in its original location and still functions, making it a remarkable technological artifact from that era.
