Sgùrr Dearg, Mountain summit in Highland, Scotland
Sgùrr Dearg is a mountain peak on the Isle of Skye that reaches approximately 986 meters and stands within the Cuillin range with steep rock faces and sharp ridges. The terrain consists of bare rock and jagged formations that create an exposed environment throughout most of the climb.
The first recorded ascent took place in 1895 and marked an important moment in Scottish mountaineering history. This early success helped draw attention to the Cuillin range as a challenging climbing destination.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and refers to the reddish color of the rocks you see when you look at the peak. Local people have always described the mountain using this color reference, which remains part of how visitors experience and talk about it.
You will need specialized climbing gear and solid climbing experience to tackle this peak, especially if you want to reach the nearby Inaccessible Pinnacle. Always check weather conditions before setting out, as the exposed ridges become hazardous quickly in rain or wind.
The peak is home to the remarkable Inaccessible Pinnacle, a narrow rock formation that climbers must navigate using specialized techniques. Many consider this formation to be one of the most technically demanding ridges in Britain.
