Murray Edwards College, Women's college in Cambridge, England
Murray Edwards College is a women's college on Huntingdon Road in Cambridge with modernist concrete architecture from the 1960s and wide green spaces. The dome-shaped dining hall forms the architectural center of the complex and shapes the appearance of the entire campus.
Founded in 1954 as New Hall, the college initially bore the name of the temporary housing for its first students. The current name was adopted in 2008 following a major gift from philanthropist Rosalind Edwards and her husband.
The name honors Rosalind Edwards, who together with her husband Steve Edwards enabled one of the largest donations in the university's history. The college remains one of the few institutions in Cambridge that admits and supports only women students.
Access to the grounds is limited for visitors, but events and exhibitions from the art collection are announced at certain times. The buildings are located about two kilometers north of the city center and can be easily reached on foot or by bicycle via Huntingdon Road.
The art collection comprises more than 500 works exclusively by women artists, making it the largest collection of its kind in Europe. Artists on display include Paula Rego, Tracey Emin and Barbara Hepworth among others.
