Carlton House Terrace, Aristocratic terrace street in Westminster, England
Carlton House Terrace is a row of houses formed by two matching blocks with white stucco fronts and neoclassical columns in Westminster. The buildings stand between Pall Mall and The Mall, facing St James's Park.
John Nash designed the terrace between 1827 and 1832 on the site of Carlton House, the demolished residence of the Prince Regent. The new houses were built as private homes for wealthy families.
The academy based here holds talks and meetings in rooms with tall windows and ornate ceilings. Some other houses along the row now serve as diplomatic offices and learned societies.
The street runs between the park and the grand avenue Pall Mall, connecting via the Duke of York's Steps to The Mall. Walking along the fronts, visitors can admire the rows of columns and the symmetry of the buildings.
The broad steps leading down to The Mall frame a memorial to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The steps also act as a vantage point for looking over the park.
