Dolforwyn Castle

Dolforwyn Castle, Medieval castle ruins on a hilltop in Powys, Wales.

Dolforwyn Castle is a medieval fortress ruin standing on a hilltop in Powys, Wales, with stone structures dating back centuries. The remains feature a rectangular keep, a circular tower, and sections of fortifying walls that still rise several meters high.

The fortress was constructed between 1273 and 1277 by a Welsh prince as part of resistance against English expansion into Wales. It later fell to English forces, marking a turning point in the struggle for Welsh independence.

The castle represents how Welsh rulers projected power through stone fortifications built on commanding hilltops. The choice of location made a deliberate statement about control over the surrounding land.

The site is free to enter and managed by heritage authorities with informational panels on-site to guide your visit. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and the hilltop location means exposed conditions in bad weather.

Excavations from 1981 to 2002 uncovered surprising objects including a leather book cover and stone catapult projectiles. These discoveries provide rare glimpses into daily life and military technology during the medieval period.
