Peterborough Cathedral, Anglican cathedral in Peterborough, England

Peterborough Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Peterborough, England, known for its three enormous round arches on the West Front and reaching a height of 44 meters (144 feet). The interior is covered by a wooden ceiling stretching 147 meters (482 feet) that connects the nave, transept, and choir.

Built between 1118 and 1238, the church replaced a monastery destroyed by Vikings in 870. The Hedda Stone inside documents the Viking attack and recalls the early history of the site.

The name derives from Saint Peter, to whom the church is dedicated and whose statue stands above the medieval entrance. During services, the space fills with singing and organ music, and many locals attend concerts or art exhibitions organized in the side aisles.

Visitors can join guided tours that include access to upper levels, with advance booking recommended. During autumn graduation ceremonies, the building can be busier, so planning ahead helps.

The building contains the tomb of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, who still receives flowers and candles from visitors. Mary Queen of Scots was also buried here before her remains were moved to Westminster Abbey.
