Gedling, Administrative district in Nottinghamshire, England
Gedling is an administrative district in Nottinghamshire comprising several towns including Arnold and Carlton. The area covers approximately 120 square kilometers with a mix of urban neighborhoods and rural villages located near Nottingham.
The district was established in 1974 when Arnold Urban District, Carlton Urban District, and part of Basford Rural District merged together. This reorganization created the administrative unit that exists today.
The Bonington Theatre in Arnold hosts performances and exhibitions throughout the year. Newstead Abbey nearby preserves connections to poet Lord Byron's life and attracts people interested in English literary heritage.
The Civic Centre in Arnot Hill Park serves as the main administrative hub and helps visitors orient themselves. The district is managed by 41 councillors representing 19 wards and is relatively easy to navigate by car or public transport.
The former Gedling Colliery site was transformed into a country park in 2015 with woodland trails and open spaces. Visitors can now walk paths where coal mining once took place and enjoy views across the surrounding Nottinghamshire countryside.
