St Mary's Church, Twickenham
St Mary's Church, Twickenham, Baroque church in Twickenham, England.
St Mary's Church in Twickenham is a red brick church displaying Tuscan pilasters, stone decorations, and fine architectural details. The building incorporates a medieval tower from the 15th century, which was preserved from the original structure that stood at this location.
The medieval nave collapsed in 1713 and was subsequently rebuilt by architect John James in a Neo-classical style. The reconstruction benefited from support provided by local painter Godfrey Kneller, who was a prominent figure in the community at that time.
The building displays multiple monuments from the 18th century honoring Lady Margaret Wildman, Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle, and others from prominent local families. These memorials show how the church served as a burial place for people of influence in the area.
The church is located on Church Street in central Twickenham and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. It opens early at 8 AM each day and holds regular services on Sundays and Wednesdays for those wishing to attend.
Two Indian princes were baptized here in 1721, a notable event for the time that drew attention from wider circles. A century later, Hallam Tennyson, son of poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, also received baptism at this location.
