Glamis Castle, Medieval castle in Angus, Scotland.
Glamis Castle is a multi-storey residence in the Strathmore Valley of Angus, Scotland, now open as a museum to visitors. The stone façades display gothic detailing, tall windows and several round towers with pointed conical roofs.
The first tower was erected in the 14th century by the Lyon family, who received royal land from Robert II. Later owners expanded the building across generations until the 19th century.
The turreted silhouette and steep-roofed towers recall Loire Valley châteaux even though this residence sits in rural Scotland. Inside, furnishings, wall hangings and portraits once used by the family remain on display for visitors to see.
The entrance sits on the ground floor where visitors register for guided tours that cover state rooms, corridors and upper chambers. Many staircases connect the levels, so guests with limited mobility should plan accordingly before visiting.
Chronicles mention a secret chamber whose location remained hidden through the centuries. Some accounts claim the room was not rediscovered until the 20th century.
