Sunhoney, Stone circle in Midmar, Scotland
Sunhoney is a stone circle in Midmar made up of stones arranged in a ring formation with a large flat stone positioned at the southern side. The arrangement creates a defined space that archaeologists believe served ritualistic purposes in ancient times.
This stone circle was built during Neolithic times by early inhabitants several thousand years ago. Nineteenth century excavations uncovered cremated remains at the center, suggesting it served as a burial site.
The recumbent stone shows carved marks that reveal the craftsmanship of people who lived thousands of years ago. Local communities held gatherings and ceremonies at such stone circles for spiritual purposes.
Access is via a woodland path near Sunhoney Farm and is available year-round for visitors. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can become muddy and slippery in wet weather.
The positioning of the large stone may align with the moon as it rises over the southern hills. This suggests the builders possessed knowledge of celestial movements and planned their monument accordingly.
