Loch Ore

Loch Ore, reservoir in Fife, Scotland, UK, on the River Ore

Loch Ore is a freshwater lake in Fife covering about 260 acres and forms the heart of Lochore Meadows Country Park. The water has uneven depths and features islands that are remnants of old railway embankments from the coal mining era.

The original loch was drained in the 1790s by Captain Park to create farmland, but the project failed and the area remained marshy. The current lake formed in the mid 20th century when nearby coal mining caused the ground to sink and water naturally filled the depression.

Loch Ore serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors come to walk, watch birds, and enjoy outdoor time together. The lake reflects how communities in rural Scotland value open spaces for simple leisure and connection with nature.

The lake is popular for sailing and rowing but has uneven depths that can make high-speed boating difficult. Access is straightforward on foot or by bike, with paths circling the water across mostly flat and open ground.

The lake hosts the annual Scottish Open Water Championships where swimmers compete over various distances. These racing events draw athletes and spectators, showing how the lake serves the community through competitive water sports.
