Burleigh Castle, Tower house in Milnathort, Scotland
Burleigh Castle is a three-story stone tower house in Milnathort featuring a distinctive corner tower with a rounded base and a rectangular upper section. The structure sits within a fortified enclosure marked by a substantial defensive ditch.
The lands were granted in 1456 to John Balfour of Balgarvie by James II, prompting construction of the tower in the late 15th century. The structure became an important stronghold for regional nobility during the medieval period.
Mary of Guise dined at the castle in 1540, and James VI of Scotland made several visits during his reign at this noble residence.
The castle is easily reached from the village of Milnathort and can be viewed from the surrounding grounds. Access is best during warmer months when the landscape is more open and the structure is most visible.
A wide and deep ditch runs along the western side and served as a key part of the stronghold's defensive system. This unusual fortification reveals the military planning that went into the tower's construction.
