Tullibole Castle, Tower house in Fossoway, Scotland
Tullibole Castle is a stone tower house with a projecting square tower on its east end that defines its distinctive profile. The structure combines defensive features with residential spaces arranged to serve as both a fortified dwelling and a family seat.
John Halliday built the castle in 1608 on land purchased from the Herring family, who had held the property since 1490. The structure rose during a time when fortified houses remained meaningful for protection and local authority in Scotland.
The castle grounds hold a memorial tied to the witch trials that touched this region in the 1600s. Visitors walking the estate can see this reminder of those who lost their lives during that troubled period.
The property functions as a wedding venue and bed and breakfast, allowing visitors to experience the castle as overnight guests. Those interested in visiting should reach out beforehand to confirm access and current conditions, as it is not freely open at all times.
Around 1790, facing financial hardship, the owners made an unusual choice and sold the roof to nearby Glendevon Castle. The roof was later restored, making this a rare example of such dramatic measures in Scottish architectural history.
