Muirfield, Links golf course in East Lothian, Scotland
Muirfield is a links golf course on the coast of East Lothian with two concentric nine-hole loops. The outer ring runs clockwise while the inner ring runs counterclockwise, creating an intricate routing across the seaside terrain.
The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers founded the course in 1744 as one of the first organized golf clubs with documented rules. This early formalization shaped how the sport developed and established a model that other golf clubs would later follow.
The course has hosted sixteen Open Championships, with winners including Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player throughout its existence.
The course is open to visitors on specific days and requires advance booking to play. Appropriate golf attire is expected, and guests should plan to arrive early and follow the club's guidelines.
The course layout ensures players face changing wind directions throughout their round, as no more than three consecutive holes point the same way. This deliberate design means wind and weather affect each round differently, adding a strategic element to every visit.
