Edinburgh Trams, Tram system in Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh Trams is a tramway network in the Scottish capital that connects Newhaven harbor through the city center to the international airport. The route runs mostly above ground and passes through central neighborhoods as well as residential and commercial areas on the city outskirts.
The current tramway began operating in 2014 and replaced an older network that existed from 1923 to 1956. An extension to Newhaven harbor opened in 2023, stretching the route further north.
The vehicles display Scottish place names and landscape motifs in their interior design, giving travelers a first impression of the region. Information panels at several stops along the route recall earlier tramway lines and their role in urban life.
The tram runs daily with high frequency from early morning until late evening, with the full journey between terminals taking around 45 minutes. Ticket machines at all stops accept contactless payment, and tickets can also be purchased through a mobile app.
The tracks run in some places through narrow historical streets, which made construction technically demanding and required special switches. During the ride through the city center, you can observe some of Edinburgh's oldest buildings up close.
