Stephen Joseph Theatre, Theater and cinema complex in Scarborough, England.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre is a theater and cinema building in Scarborough with two performance spaces of different sizes. The main hall seats approximately 400 people, while the smaller studio with around 160 seats serves both theatrical performances and film screenings.
The building opened as an Odeon Cinema in 1936 and was a large cinema with nearly 1,700 seats at that time. In 1996, it was converted into a theater following extensive renovation work and received its current name.
The venue stages contemporary plays and welcomes regional performers to its stage regularly. Christmas shows are a yearly tradition, and local youth groups develop their talents through performances here.
The building has a restaurant, several bars, and accessible seating areas for all visitors. Film screenings happen regularly throughout the year, so checking the program in advance helps plan your visit.
The main hall features a specialized stage lift and a wire mesh ceiling that lets technicians access lighting equipment from above. This unusual design allows for flexible technical work during shows.
