Duke of York's Theatre, Theatre in St Martin's Lane, London, United Kingdom
Duke of York's Theatre is a protected historic playhouse in Westminster, offering just over 600 seats spread across several tiers. The interior features typical Victorian theatre architecture with balconies that wrap around the auditorium.
The house opened under the name Trafalgar Square Theatre and changed its name three years later to carry a royal title. Over the decades, directors and companies changed while the building kept its role as a premiere stage.
The building takes its name from the second son of King Edward VII, who later became monarch himself. Over the years, the stage became a place where writers tested new plays and audiences witnessed premieres that later turned into classics.
The stage sits within walking distance from Leicester Square, so visitors can reach it easily after a walk through the neighborhood. Performances take place throughout the year, and ticket sales usually begin several weeks before opening night.
The premiere of a famous story about a boy who refused to grow up took place here and shaped the theatre's tradition. Decades later, performances in this space inspired an Italian composer to create one of his most famous operas.
