English National Opera, Opera company at London Coliseum, United Kingdom
The English National Opera performs at the London Coliseum, a theatre with seating for more than two thousand people. The house features a resident orchestra and professional chorus, both of which take part in productions on a regular basis.
Lilian Baylis founded the company in 1931 at Sadler's Wells Theatre in north London to provide regular opera performances. The ensemble later moved to its current home on St. Martin's Lane, where it continues to perform today.
All performances are sung in English, even when the works were originally composed in another language. This approach allows the audience to follow the text without subtitles and makes the experience more direct.
Tickets can be purchased through the website or at the box office in the building, with the performance season running from autumn to spring. Booking ahead is advisable, particularly for popular productions or weekend performances.
All visitors under 21 years old receive free entry to any performance, regardless of the evening or production. This program aims to make opera more accessible to young people and to nurture a new generation of opera enthusiasts.
