Auchagallon Stone Circle, Bronze Age burial site in Machrie, Scotland
Auchagallon Stone Circle is an archaeological site with 15 stones arranged in a circle around a central mound in North Ayrshire. Thirteen of the stones are made from red sandstone and two are constructed from grey granite.
The site dates to the Bronze Age, approximately 2000 to 1200 BC, based on excavations conducted during the Victorian period. Those investigations uncovered a burial chamber within the central mound.
The circular arrangement of stones suggests ancient burial practices, with the central mound likely containing remains and artifacts from Bronze Age ceremonies.
The site is freely accessible throughout the year and sits near the junction of Shore Road and Brodick Road in the area. Visitors can explore the stones without restrictions or barriers.
Researchers debate whether the structure represents a stone circle or a kerbed cairn, as both features are present in the construction. This ambiguity makes determining the original purpose challenging.
