Construction of the church began in 1835 under architect William Hallett, marking Brighton's first Roman Catholic church following the Catholic Emancipation period.

The structure received Grade II* listed status for its architectural significance and contains a Baroque sculpture created by John Edward Carew.

The church maintains regular Mass schedules and religious services, serving the Catholic community in the eastern section of Brighton.

Maria Fitzherbert, who funded the church construction, rests within the building beneath a memorial stone depicting her holding three wedding rings.
