Baildon, town and civil parish in Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Baildon is a town in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, sitting between the Aire Valley and the open moorland to the north. The built-up streets give way quickly to Baildon Moor on one side and to Roberts Park along the River Aire on the other, so the town sits between open country and a formal green space.
People settled on the high ground around Baildon thousands of years ago, and Bronze Age rock carvings on the moor are among the earliest traces they left behind. From the medieval period, ironstone mining gave the area an industrial role that later shifted to textile manufacturing when mills arrived in the 18th century.
The stone terraces and mill-era buildings that line many streets give Baildon a look rooted in its textile past. Local community events draw residents to parks and open spaces throughout the year, keeping a strong sense of neighbourhood life.
Baildon has good bus connections to Bradford and Shipley, and a nearby rail station puts Leeds and Bradford within a short journey. For walking on the moor, sturdy footwear is a good idea as the paths can be uneven and wet depending on the season.
The cable tramway at Shipley Glen, just outside Baildon, is one of the oldest working funiculars of its kind in England and still runs in much the same way as when it opened in 1895. Roberts Park, at the southern edge of town, sits within the Saltaire World Heritage Site, a designation most visitors associate with the village of Saltaire rather than with Baildon itself.
