Shipley Glen Tramway, Funicular railway in Saltaire, England
The Shipley Glen Tramway extends over a track length of 440 yards with two terminal stations and operates at a maximum speed of 7.5 miles per hour.
Local entrepreneur Sam Wilson inaugurated this transport system in 1895 to provide access to the entertainment venues at Shipley Glen, including a wooden toboggan ride.
The tramway represents a preserved element of Victorian transportation engineering, maintained by dedicated volunteers through a charitable preservation trust.
The lower station stands 200 meters from Saltaire railway station, with card-only payments accepted for adult return tickets at £2.50 and junior tickets at £1.00.
The tramway features a narrow gauge of 20 inches and navigates a steep gradient of 1 in 7, making it a technical achievement of 19th-century engineering.
