One O'Clock Gun, Time signal cannon at Edinburgh Castle, United Kingdom
The One O'Clock Gun is fired daily from Mills Mount Battery at Edinburgh Castle, producing a loud sound that echoes across the city streets.
The time signal tradition began in 1861 when businessman John Hewat brought the concept from Paris to help ships in the Firth of Forth set their maritime clocks.
The ceremonial firing of the gun represents a continuous link between Edinburgh's maritime past and present, marking time for both residents and visitors.
Visitors need to enter through the Portcullis Gate and arrive at designated viewing areas at least 10 minutes before the 1:00 PM firing time.
The 105mm field gun does not fire on Sundays, Christmas Day, or Good Friday, and in 2006 Bombardier Alison Jones became the first woman to operate it.
