Museum of the Royal Scots

The Museum of the Royal Scots occupies sections of Edinburgh Castle with displays of weapons, medals, uniforms, and military equipment spanning several centuries. The galleries feature glass cases showing campaigns and information about the soldiers who took part in them.

The regiment was founded in 1633 and is Scotland's oldest infantry unit with a history spanning wars across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The collection traces how the regiment developed from its creation through to modern times.

The collection reflects Scottish military heritage through regimental colors, personal equipment, and objects that belonged to soldiers from different periods. These items tell stories of individuals who served Scotland and shape how visitors understand local experiences of war.

Museum access is included with Edinburgh Castle admission and visitors explore the exhibits during regular castle opening hours. Allow at least an hour to see the main displays properly.

The museum preserves handwritten letters and personal diaries from soldiers who fought in the World Wars and documented their experiences. These intimate documents offer direct insights into the lives of the men behind the uniforms.
