Tyneside

Tyneside is a connected urban area along the River Tyne in northern England, covering several boroughs on both sides of the water. The built-up areas stretch from Newcastle city centre to coastal towns on the North Sea, linking residential neighborhoods with industrial and port zones.

Coal mining began here around 1200 and over the centuries brought shipyards, steelworks, and engineering firms. German craftsmen settled around 1600 and helped develop the metal industries, which shaped the area until the 20th century.

People here speak with a distinctive accent shaped by centuries of mining and close-knit working communities. You can still hear this way of speaking in pubs and cafés along the river, where locals gather and keep these speech patterns alive.

The metro system links all boroughs and runs to coastal areas, making it easy to move between different parts of the region. Along the river you will find footpaths and cycle routes that give an overview of the urban zones and waterfront areas.

Rowing races were so popular in the early 1800s that thousands gathered on the banks to watch and bet on professional rowers. These contests helped spread the sport across the country, and rowing clubs along the river remain active today.
