Kingston University, University campus in Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom
The institution is an educational facility in southwest London with four separate sites between Kingston Hill and Roehampton Vale. Each site houses buildings for specific disciplines, from studios for dance and design to laboratories for science and health care.
The facility began operating in 1899 as Kingston Technical Institute, initially training young tradespeople in mechanics and building crafts. In 1992, the school, by then upgraded to a polytechnic, gained the status of a full university.
The institution takes its name from the historic town where it is rooted, bringing together students from more than 140 countries in classrooms and workshops. Across the sites, aspiring designers, engineers and nurses work in purpose-built spaces tailored to their respective fields.
Public buses connect the individual sites, with the journey between Kingston Hill and Penrhyn Road taking around 15 minutes. Buildings are accessible during daytime hours in term time, though many areas remain open only to enrolled students and teaching staff.
The Town House complex from 2020 combines a library, dance studios and performance halls under a curved timber roof that channels natural light through the floors. This building received the prestigious Stirling Prize for architecture in 2021.
