Holkham

Holkham is an administrative division in North Norfolk, a rural area along the coast between Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Overy Staithe. The land transitions between marshes, farmland, and coastal strips, with the village itself sitting peacefully among fields that form the backbone of daily life here.

The area was reshaped from the 1600s onward through large-scale drainage projects that converted wetlands into productive farmland. This transformation fundamentally changed how people lived and worked in this region for generations afterward.

The parish church of St. Withburga has a tower that rises above the flat fields and serves as a local landmark. The building shows how people have worshipped at this spot across many centuries of the area's life.

The village sits along the A149 coastal road, which provides straightforward connections to neighboring towns and villages. Being situated in open countryside close to water means weather can change quickly here, so proper clothing and shelter are practical considerations.

The area contains a mix of different natural habitats within a small space, from salt marshes to sand dunes. This close coexistence of varied ecosystems makes it a place where you can move between quite different landscapes in just a short walk.
