Callanish X, Neolithic stone circle in Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
Callanish X is a megalithic stone circle on the Outer Hebrides made up of stones arranged in an elliptical shape. The circle measures roughly 21 by 19 meters and contains a mound of stacked stones in or near its center.
Archaeological investigations revealed that a wooden structure once stood at this location before the stones were erected. This earlier building was later replaced by the more permanent stone circle.
The arrangement shows how Neolithic people organized their religious or social gatherings in one place. Such stone circles served as gathering points for communities spread across the islands.
The site lies about one kilometer east of another known stone circle and is reachable from a road. The nearest larger town is about 25 kilometers away when approaching from the coast.
The center of the circle holds a cairn, a mound of piled stones, positioned slightly east of the circle's geometric center point. This off-center placement may suggest that the builders took precise measurements or followed astronomical alignments.
