Senedd building, Legislative building in Cardiff Bay, Wales
The Senedd building serves as the parliament chamber for the Welsh legislature in Cardiff Bay and features three floors with large glass surfaces and Welsh slate walls. The circular debating chamber sits on the ground level and is topped by a timber funnel with a transparent roof that lets in natural light.
Construction started in 2001 after an international competition won by Richard Rogers Partnership. The opening took place in 2006 and marked the first dedicated parliament home following the establishment of the Welsh National Assembly in 1999.
The name comes from the Welsh word for parliament and reflects the nation's self-governance following devolution. The central timber and glass funnel above the chamber opens the assembly space to the sky and expresses the transparency of democratic work.
The entrance faces the waterfront promenade in the bay and the building is wheelchair accessible throughout. Admission is free and guided tours run on weekdays and weekends, though opening hours may vary depending on parliamentary sessions.
The roof collects rainwater to irrigate the surrounding green spaces and flush toilets inside the building. All materials used come from Wales or Britain and were sourced within 500 miles of the site to limit transport emissions.
