Southfields, Residential district in Wandsworth, England
Southfields is a residential district in Wandsworth featuring a distinctive street layout called The Grid. This network contains many Edwardian terraced houses and maisonettes arranged between Replingham and Revelstoke Roads.
The area takes its name from the South Field of Dunsford Manor, which was originally rural land. Development into a residential neighborhood began after the railway line extended from Wimbledon to Putney Bridge in 1889.
The Fazl Mosque shows the area's diverse religious heritage and reflects how the neighborhood welcomed different communities over time. Its presence here tells visitors how the district evolved from a purely residential Victorian area into a place where people from various backgrounds established their own spiritual centers.
The District Line at Southfields station provides direct connections to central London and other parts of the city. Wimbledon Park and King George's Park nearby offer free recreational activities including tennis courts and open green spaces.
The Fazl Mosque was built in 1926 as London's first purpose-built mosque structure. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community established this building to mark their presence in the city during a time when such facilities were exceptionally rare.
