Fort Belan, 18th century coastal fort in Llandwrog, Wales
Located at the southwestern end of the Menai Strait, Fort Belan consists of stone walls with fortified towers displaying two-headed eagle symbols and inner barracks for troops.
Thomas Wynn commissioned the construction of Fort Belan in 1775 for £30,000 to protect Britain's coastline during the American War of Independence.
The fort evolved from a military installation to a private residence in the 1820s when the Wynn family added a small harbor for their steam yacht.
Fort Belan currently operates as a self-catering holiday complex with six cottages that accommodate up to forty-five guests in the restored historic buildings.
The structure stands as the only purpose-built fort associated with the American Revolution on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean at the Dinlle Peninsula.
