HMS Courageous, Nuclear submarine museum at Devonport Naval Base, England.
HMS Courageous is a Churchill-class submarine at the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre in England, now serving as a floating museum. The submarine measures around 87 meters (285 feet) in length and includes several sections such as the Control Room and the Senior Rates Mess, which show visitors how the crew worked and lived on board.
The submarine served in the Royal Navy from 1971 to 1992 and took part in the Falklands War in 1982. After its decommissioning, it remained at Devonport and was later opened to visitors to show life aboard a nuclear submarine during the Cold War.
The name HMS Courageous recalls a line of Royal Navy warships dating back to the 18th century. Today, visitors step inside a real nuclear submarine and see the narrow corridors and technical equipment that show how the crew lived during long missions underwater.
Visits take place in groups of at least four people and begin with a safety video. The spaces inside the submarine are narrow and low, so visitors should be careful on steep ladders and tight passageways.
During restoration, some parts from HMS Valiant were transferred onto HMS Courageous. This happened during the Devonport Navy Days in 2006, when both submarines were still at the naval base.
