Trimontium, Roman fort ruins near Melrose, Scotland
The remains of Trimontium fort spread across the banks of River Tweed, featuring foundations of barracks, granaries, and defensive walls from Roman times.
Between 79 and 184 AD, this military installation served as the largest outpost fort beyond Hadrian's Wall, housing 500 cavalry troops and additional legionaries.
Excavations at Trimontium yielded an extensive collection of Roman military equipment, everyday objects, and craft materials, now displayed in the National Museum of Scotland.
The Trimontium Museum in Melrose opens Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, offering guided tours and educational programs about the fort.
The site contains 117 pits filled with Roman artifacts, making it one of the richest depositories of Roman military items discovered in Britain.
