Castle Ward, Country house and museum near Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.
Castle Ward is a country house near Strangford with two completely different exterior styles: one side displays Classical Palladian forms while the other shows Gothic features. Inside are living rooms, a kitchen, bedrooms, and collected objects that reflect the scale of the estate.
The house was commissioned in 1760 by Bernard Ward and became the seat of the family that would later become Viscounts of Bangor. The construction reflected the wealth and standing of the family in the 1700s.
The rooms display objects and furnishings that show how a family from the 1700s actually lived from day to day. You see how successive generations shaped and used the different spaces over time.
The estate has extensive paths for walking and cycling, plus cafés and shops on the grounds. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable, as the terrain varies in elevation and some paths may be unpaved.
