Exploris

Exploris is a public aquarium and seal sanctuary in Portaferry, Northern Ireland, displaying sharks, rays, tropical fish, otters, penguins, and crocodiles in separate specialized environments. Each area is designed to match the natural conditions these animals need.

The facility was established in 1987 and underwent major renovation work starting in 2014. It reopened in 2016 with updated exhibits and improved infrastructure for animal care and visitor experience.

The name reflects the idea of exploration and discovery of marine life. Visitors watch staff members work with animals daily and learn about their natural behaviors and needs.

A special focus is the rescue and care of injured and abandoned seal pups found along the Northern Irish coast. These animals receive treatment and are returned to the sea when they are healthy enough.
