Fobney Lock, Navigation lock at Small Mead, Reading, United Kingdom
The lock structure on the River Kennet includes a cut section that separates Fobney Island from the main river channel.
Engineer John Hore from Newbury supervised the construction of Fobney Lock between 1718 and 1723 as part of the Kennet Navigation system.
The Canal & River Trust maintains this section of the waterway, ensuring the preservation of British industrial engineering heritage.
The lock mechanism enables water vessels to navigate a vertical distance of 2.24 meters between different river levels.
Fobney Island, adjacent to the lock, transformed into a wetland reserve in 2013 with meadows and reed beds for wildlife conservation.
