Perfeddwlad, Medieval territory between River Conwy and River Dee, Wales
Perfeddwlad is a medieval territory in northeastern Wales that lay between the River Conwy and River Dee. The land comprised four distinct cantrefi - Rhos, Rhufoniog, Dyffryn Clwyd, and Tegeingl - each serving as a separate administrative region within this broader area.
This territory emerged in the early Middle Ages as contested land between the Welsh principalities of Gwynedd and Powys. Control shifted repeatedly until English forces gradually gained dominance during the 13th century, eventually becoming fully incorporated into English rule.
The region maintained connections to the Celtic Deceangli tribe, who established settlements and influenced local customs from the first century BC onwards.
The territory is not organized today as a single unified site, but rather consists of several local communities and archaeological locations scattered across the region. Visitors can explore the historical areas by traveling through the various towns and landscapes that lie between the two rivers.
The name translates to 'Midland' in Welsh, literally describing how this territory sat between several powerful regions. This geographical position made it a natural buffer zone, which helps explain why control over it was constantly contested.
