Chillerton Down transmitting station, Transmitting station in Isle of Wight, United Kingdom.
Chillerton Down transmitting station is a radio broadcasting facility located on the Isle of Wight at an elevation of 200 meters. It features a 229-meter steel lattice mast secured by fifteen stay lines anchored to ground blocks.
The facility was built in 1958 by the Independent Television Authority to broadcast television signals across Central Southern England using VHF Band III. After several decades, the structure could no longer support the weight requirements for new UHF television aerials.
The transmitter is a recognizable landmark in the island landscape, and local people know the structure simply as "the masts", visible from many parts of the island.
The station broadcasts FM and DAB radio signals that reach across the region. Visitors should note that this is an active broadcasting facility and public access may be restricted.
The facility was originally designed for television broadcasting but later converted to radio-only transmission. This transition shows how technological advances allowed older structures to be repurposed for new functions.
