Abbot's Tower, Medieval tower in New Abbey, Scotland.
Abbot's Tower is an L-shaped residential house in New Abbey. Its rubble walls are approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) thick, and the building rises over 32 feet (10 meters) in height.
Gilbert Broun, the final Abbot of Sweetheart Abbey, built this defensive residence in 1580. Construction occurred during the turbulent period following the Scottish Reformation.
The tower blends religious and military building traditions. Each floor contains a fireplace, and a toilet niche sits in the southern corner of the structure.
The structure is now a private residence and was thoroughly restored in the 1990s. Public access to the interior and grounds is not permitted.
Archaeological digs uncovered the foundations of additional buildings and a defensive wall surrounding the property. Researchers found 16th-century pottery and construction materials at the site.
