Abbotts Moss Nature Reserve, Nature reserve and scientific interest site in Whitegate and Marton, England.
Abbotts Moss Nature Reserve is a protected conservation area near Whitegate and Marton in Cheshire that features bogland, heathland, and pools. The site spans about 12 hectares and sits within Delamere Forest northwest of Winsford.
The bog formed on a base of peat that accumulated over thousands of years. The two large bog areas called South Moss and Shemmy Moss show a long history of soil formation at this location.
The Cheshire Wildlife Trust manages this conservation area under lease from the Forestry Commission to protect numerous plant and animal species.
A former railway embankment called Whitegate Way was converted into a footpath and bridleway that divides the area into two sections for visitors. The well-built paths make it possible to explore both sides and observe different habitats.
Adders live here, a snake species found at only two locations throughout Cheshire. This makes the area a special place for this uncommon species in the region.
