78 Derngate, Art Deco house museum in Northampton, England
78 Derngate is a four-story terraced house in Northampton that underwent a complete redesign in Art Deco style. The interior features black and white geometric patterns throughout, applied to walls, floors, and ceilings, creating a unified and striking visual identity in every room.
The house was built in 1815 as a Georgian terrace and received a complete redesign in 1916 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This radical transformation turned the classical rooms into an example of the most advanced design of its era.
The name Derngate reflects the street's standing as a fashionable address in Northampton. Today, visitors can see how the bold black and white patterns and dark furnishings make the rooms feel like a snapshot of early 20th-century design culture.
The house can only be visited by guided tour led by knowledgeable guides. Visitors should allow enough time, as the tour covers multiple rooms across four floors.
This was Charles Rennie Mackintosh's final major architectural project before he stepped back from the profession. It also remains his only residential design completed in England, giving the place special significance in his artistic legacy.
